I realize that the POVs defined in the earlier essay do not address the problem. So I'm going to try again. Here's a modified list of POVs from LMD, dispensing with the advisory POVs and de-Arthurizing the other terms:
Old Term Speaker Listener Followup? New Name
GossipPOV 3rdParty 3rdParty No
FollowupPOV 3rdParty 3rdParty Yes
SubjectPOV Subject 3rdParty No PlayerTells
SubjectFollowup Subject 3rdParty Yes
DirObjectPOV DirObject 3rdParty No DirObjectTells
DirObjectFollowup DirObject 3rdParty Yes
MenuPOV Player/Subject DirObject No PlayerActs
ToPlayerPOV Subject Player/DO No
WitnessPOV 3rdParty Player No WitnessSees
ToldPOV
TellNewPOV
Now, my new system includes only five POVs, while the original system had 11. I must explain the discrepancy. I show three followup POVs; the concept is not yet addressed in my new system. What's the difference between GossipPOV and WitnessPOV?
OK, I have established from inspection that MenuPOV is the same as ToPlayerPOV; therefore I shall conflate them. Also, I think that I can provide automatic followup text adjustment, as it requires nothing more than substitution of personal pronouns for names when those names are being repeated. However, there are a few catches. First, how do we know the case to apply to the pronoun? Perhaps the variable should simply specify the name and the case, and leave it to the translator to provide the pronoun. Would writers resent the intrusion on their power or appreciate the assistance? I'll check this out with Laura. If I do proceed, then the form of the variable will be much simpler; just <SubjectNom>, <SubjectAcc>, <SubjectGen>, <SubjectGen2>.
More difficult to answer is the issue of computability of followup pronouns. It's easy enough to figure if a name has already been stated, making use of a pronoun appropriate, but what about interactions between pronouns? If a followup sentence will have two masculine nouns, should we not dispense with the use of the pronoun in the second case? I suppose it's computable.
And the old GossipPOV is the same as my new WitnessTells POV. Done.
